I started watching The Good Place again and OMG it’s so good! Kristen Bell is one of my favorite actors. I love her humor, style, and her way of being. She’s also cute AF. Anyway, watching her character grow through the series is so rewarding.
Her character starts off with very questionable qualities where it’s clear she doesn’t really care about others (although that might just be a self defense/protective mechanism) and through the series, after meeting more positive moral and ethical influences, having the support of a unique friend group, and actually having the courage to face her own demons no matter how many times she fails was so heartwarming. Growing from a primarily selfish state of being to one that actually cares about others and is thoughtful about her actions beautifully encapsulated the experience of maturity IMO.
I think what resonated with me the most is how this was kind of reflective of my own journey. While I was nowhere as ethically and morally questionable as Bell’s character was, I am sure I made my fair share of mistakes while stumbling through life on my own pathway to maturity. Finding genuinely supportive and empathetic friends who saw my highest potential and held me to it without letting me cling onto my excuses was instrumental to my growth. I also happen to be very conscientious about self growth and don’t really shy away from exploring deep and dark parts of myself once those things come into my awareness and so that’s been helpful.
I feel fortunate that I am now surrounded with so much love and care with people who try to do the “right” (moral and ethical) thing no matter how difficult it might be. This has helped me become clearer on what my own core values are and has helped me identify what I can and cannot let into my inner circle. Having this discernment has helped create a much healthier life for myself. While my circle might be small, the quality of it makes up for the lack of quantity.
